HISTORY OF THE FIRM

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Matsi Law Chambers Inc, which started as Matsi Attorneys in 2005, was incorporated in 2010 and registered with the CIPC under the name Matsi Mailula Inc. Attorneys. The new name became necessary upon a new director coming on board, which development brought the number of directors to two. The two directors come from adjacent villages in Limpopo Province and creating legacy together appeared to be a compelling mission at the time. When the said new director resigned in 2019, the law firm changed its name to Matsi Law Chambers Inc.

There has been confusion between this law firm, Matsi Law Chambers Inc, and the departed director’s new law firm. That confusion, which is regrettable, is owing to a number of things. The change in office addresses, between 2018 and 2022, contributed to the confusion.

Due to a tax-related audit inspection by SARS the staff members started leaving the law firm in droves in fear that the process would lead to the collapse of the law firm. Even though there is a common belief that an audit by SARS would necessarily lead to a corporate collapse, such is unfounded as those are regular processes the tax body undertakes on anyone or any entity. Not all audits lead to collapses of law firms. This law firm is one of the entities that are still standing as it cooperated and disclosed fully, and there was no basis for SARS to undertake any liquidation processes against it.

Now, the truth is that massive staff turnover has negatively affected the operations of the law firm. Only its founding director was left alone and new staff members had to be engaged and trained within a short period of time. The law firm is now running smoothly like a well-oiled machine. It remains resolute in its mission to serve its clients with distinction. It refused to be another sad story of the previously disadvantaged blacks. It is here to stay.

Apart from all these, there was a plan to collapse this law firm and for the current director to be a scapegoat as regards every challenge that existed as at the date of the departed director’s resignation, including massive litigation by service providers. The law firm approached the court to protect itself and the courts made numerous decisions in its favour. Meanwhile a negative narrative was being created to paint the name of the law firm in a bad light. The law firm has the right to protect itself but has not gone out of its way to run a campaign against the unfair narrative. The situation turned around when the many court orders in its favour came to light.

“The law firm was shielded from existential threat by the High Court, SCA and the Constitutional Court”

The law firm faced a lot of challenges, including litigation that commenced since 2019, in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) and the Constitutional Court
